{"id":8559,"date":"2020-11-10T13:56:50","date_gmt":"2020-11-10T18:56:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.cfsri.org\/?p=8559"},"modified":"2020-11-10T13:56:50","modified_gmt":"2020-11-10T18:56:50","slug":"head-start-and-our-history-roots-in-civil-rights","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/childrensfriendri.org\/2020\/11\/10\/head-start-and-our-history-roots-in-civil-rights\/","title":{"rendered":"Head Start and Our History: Roots in Civil Rights"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-8561\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cfsri.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/iStock-627918878.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"498\" srcset=\"https:\/\/childrensfriendri.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/iStock-627918878.jpg 700w, https:\/\/childrensfriendri.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/iStock-627918878-600x427.jpg 600w, https:\/\/childrensfriendri.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/iStock-627918878-300x213.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>Ask anyone what they\u2019re thinking about these days, and they\u2019re likely to tell you the election has been on their mind.&nbsp; This year, millions of Americans took to the polls on November 3 to choose our elected leaders on the local, state, and national levels. &nbsp;As we exercise the right to vote, we celebrate and thank those who worked and continue to work to protect civil rights.&nbsp; And for Head Start, it\u2019s a moment to honor our roots in civil rights.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What does Head Start have to do with civil rights?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>So what does Head Start have to do with civil rights anyway?&nbsp; Participation in a democracy is about the right to vote, but also so much more: it\u2019s also about a fair shot in life.&nbsp; Head Start was founded in that spirit, with civil rights leaders like Fannie Lou Hamer on the front lines of the first Head Start centers.&nbsp; The National Head Start Association shares this<\/p>\n<p>[LINK: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhsa.org\/celebrating-head-start%E2%80%99s-commitment-african-american-children#:~:text=The%20Head%20Start%20program%20began,all%20Americans%2C%20especially%20African%20Americans\">https:\/\/www.nhsa.org\/celebrating-head-start%E2%80%99s-commitment-african-american-children#:~:text=The%20Head%20Start%20program%20began,all%20Americans%2C%20especially%20African%20Americans<\/a>.]:<\/p>\n<p><em>The Head Start program began in the summer of 1965, amidst the mass social upheaval and an organized civil rights movement that was determined to ensure economic equality and an end to discrimination for all Americans, especially African Americans. &nbsp;The program, partly in response to this, was one of many created during the Johnson administration\u2019s declared War on Poverty.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>But Head Start\u2019s success was neither clearly predicted nor easy, especially for many educators and parents in the South who faced strong opposition to the idea of providing early education, health, nutrition, and parent involvement services to African American children.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>At a recent regional conference of Head Start leaders and staff, Dr. Marvin Hogan, Executive Director of Friends of Children of Mississippi, Inc.
