At Children\u2019s Friend, we have been part of a statewide effort to make sure everyone in Rhode Island is counted in the 2020 census. The census is a constitutionally mandated count of every person living in the country every ten years.<\/p>\n

You might ask: Why do we have a census? And why does it matter for kids in Rhode Island?<\/strong>
\nThe purpose of the census goes beyond knowing how many people live in the US. It\u2019s also how the federal government figures out how to allocate more than $800 billion to more than 300 federal programs every year. According to Child Trends, more than one-third of that money goes to \u201ccritical federal assistance programs supporting children and families<\/strong>, including Medicaid, the Children\u2019s Health Insurance Program, Title IV-E Foster Care, Title IV-E Adoption Assistance, and the Child Care and Development Block Grant.\u201d [LINK: https:\/\/www.childtrends.org\/publications\/child-trends-opposes-decision-to-end-census-count-prematurely<\/a>]<\/p>\n

The U.S. Census Bureau has decided to end the 2020 census count a month early \u2013 by September 30 \u2013 but nearly 4 in 10 households remain uncounted.<\/strong> The Boston Globe\u2019s Rhode Map reports that in Rhode Island, 61.1 percent of households have been counted \u2013 but in Providence, only 48% have been counted, and in Central Falls, that number drops to 42.9%<\/strong> (LINK: https:\/\/us11.campaign-archive.com\/?u=90f9e490a860897c7155feca1&id=5f53f4a21c<\/a>).<\/p>\n

Undercounting Rhode Islanders \u2013 especially in already marginalized and disenfranchised communities \u2013 will \u201cexacerbate racial and ethnic disparities in access to public services and political power,\u201d<\/strong> (Child Trends.) Plainly put, undercounting means that critical resources will be limited for the communities that need them the most. It harms the communities where we live, serve, and work.<\/p>\n

We believe every child counts \u2013 so let\u2019s make sure everyone is counted.<\/p>\n
