{"id":8151,"date":"2020-07-07T15:17:53","date_gmt":"2020-07-07T19:17:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.cfsri.org\/?p=8151"},"modified":"2020-07-07T15:17:53","modified_gmt":"2020-07-07T19:17:53","slug":"the-state-of-babies-yearbook-2020-maternal-and-child-health-inequities-emerge-even-before-birth","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/childrensfriendri.org\/2020\/07\/07\/the-state-of-babies-yearbook-2020-maternal-and-child-health-inequities-emerge-even-before-birth\/","title":{"rendered":"The State of Babies Yearbook 2020: Maternal and Child Health Inequities Emerge Even Before Birth"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-8152 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cfsri.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/iStock-1187138727.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"724\" height=\"483\" srcset=\"https:\/\/childrensfriendri.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/iStock-1187138727.jpg 724w, https:\/\/childrensfriendri.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/iStock-1187138727-600x400.jpg 600w, https:\/\/childrensfriendri.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/iStock-1187138727-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 724px) 100vw, 724px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Here on our blog, we\u2019ve been posting frequently about racism and its impact on the children, families, and communities whom we serve and with whom we partner.&nbsp; All over the country and world, we see a heightened response to the ongoing systemic oppression of people who are Black, Indigenous, and people of color \u2013 and now is not the time to look away; rather, it\u2019s time to deepen our understanding and commitment to transformation.<\/p>\n<p>Today, we\u2019re bringing you a report from Think Babies that illustrates <strong>why racial equity is so crucial to our mission<\/strong>.&nbsp; In their annual <a href=\"https:\/\/www.childtrends.org\/publications\/maternal-and-child-health-inequities-emerge-even-before-birth\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">State of Babies Yearbook<\/a>, Child Trends and Zero to Three reports that maternal and child health inequities start even before birth (<a href=\"https:\/\/stateofbabies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/Maternal-and-Child-Health-Inequities-Emerge-Even-Before-Birth.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">you can read the whole thing here<\/a>).&nbsp; They write:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo have a healthy pregnancy and positive birth outcomes, women and their infants require access to appropriate health care services, before, during, and after birth. Extensive data indicate serious racial and ethnic disparities in infant and maternal health care and health outcomes. For example, Black, American Indian, and Hispanic women&nbsp;are more likely than their White counterparts to receive late or no prenatal care.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey are also more likely to experience serious health problems or die during or after birth from resulting complications. In comparison to White infants, Black and American Indian infants have a much higher risk of being born preterm and\/or with low birth weight, are less likely to be breastfed, and are more likely to die within their first year.<sup>\u201d<\/sup><\/p>\n<p>Why is this?
