What does innovation mean, anyway?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>What does Children\u2019s Friend have to do with a construction management company and a machinery distributor?\u00a0 Well, we have all been recognized as leaders in innovation in Rhode Island!\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/pbn.com\/top-companies-recognized-for-growth-innovation-at-pbns-annual-fastest-growing-innovative-companies-ceremony\/\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/pbn.com\/top-companies-recognized-for-growth-innovation-at-pbns-annual-fastest-growing-innovative-companies-ceremony\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">This August, Children\u2019s Friend was recognized by Providence Business News as a 2021 Most Innovative Company in the nonprofit category.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We are grateful to get to celebrate the hard work of so many staff who have innovated at Children\u2019s Friend over the last years.&nbsp; This is also an opportune moment for us to reflect on what \u201cinnovation\u201d really means at Children\u2019s Friend.&nbsp; The dictionary says to innovate is to \u201cmake changes in something established, especially by introducing new methods, ideas, or products.\u201d&nbsp; The Latin root of \u201cinnovate\u201d is \u201cnovus,\u201d which means \u201cnew.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So does innovation mean we have to create something shiny and brand new, ideally with technology involved, topped off with a shiny chrome finish?&nbsp; At Children\u2019s Friend, the answer is a resounding \u201cno\u201d!&nbsp; Instead, we focus on noticing where we are already at our best, understanding what got us there, and enabling ourselves to do more of that or apply those lessons elsewhere.&nbsp; And, innovation doesn\u2019t happen when one person goes away by themselves to think hard!&nbsp; Our innovation process is \u201chuman-centered,\u201d which means that the people most impacted by a particular challenge or opportunity are the ones designing and implementing the innovation.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>At Children\u2019s Friend, innovation doesn\u2019t mean that we\u2019re churning out fancy new products \u2013 but what we <em>are<\/em> doing is much more meaningful for our industry: Our amazing staff is making small and big changes every day in order to better serve kids and families.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cfsri.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/webbob.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-8113\" width=\"200\" height=\"249\"\/><figcaption>Robert Hagberg\nChief of Strategy<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What does Children\u2019s Friend have to do with a construction management company and a machinery distributor?\u00a0 Well, we have all been recognized as leaders in innovation in Rhode Island!\u00a0 This August, Children\u2019s Friend was recognized by Providence Business News as a 2021 Most Innovative Company in the nonprofit category.
